pera playThe Detroit Tigers have acquired some bullpen help ahead of the trade deadline. On Wednesday, the team announced a trade acquiring RHP Rafael Montero from the Atlanta Braves, in exchange for minor league INF Jim Jarvis.
nicephMontero will now join a Tigers’ bullpen that has struggled to find quality production outside of Will Vest. As the team looks to gear up for a deep postseason run, Montero should provide the team with some added relief help.
8k8At 64-46, the Tigers have built a comfortable nine-game lead in the AL Central, but have been in the midst of a strange slide over the last month of action.
The 34-year-old is an 11-year Major League veteran, and has spent time with the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves. This season during time split between the Astros and Braves, Montero is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. His best season perhaps came in 2022 with the Astros, when he pitched to a 5-2 record with a 2.37 ERA in 71 appearances.
Jarvis goes the other way to Atlanta in the deal. The 24-year-old infielder has spent this year at Double-A Erie. This season, he is hitting .242 with two home runs, 29 RBI’s, and a .652 OPS.
The trade deadline ends on Thursday, July 31, and the Tigers are expected to continue their aggressive approach until it passes. One of the best teams in baseball despite their recent slide, Detroit is sure to push a lot of their chips to the table to maximize their championship odds.
